Since its inception as University of Engineering and Technology Lahore in 1961, the University has tremendously expanded in terms of infrastructure, faculty, staff, and its scope. Planning and Development Directorate has played a leading role in this marvellous transformation from an engineering college to a full-fledged leading University. The Directorate of P&D at UET has also played a leading role in development of many sister Universities, namely UET Taxila, MNS UET Multan, and KFUEIT Rahimyar Khan.

The Directorate, under the directions of the Vice Chancellor, plans the development schemes of the University and approaches the relevant ministries (Federal HEC, Min. of Planning Development and Reform, MoS&T, Punjab HEC, Punjab HED, Punjab P&D Department, etc.) for allocation of funds for these vital schemes. The directorate keeps a close liaison with the ministries for successful pursuit of its prime duty of planning and development.

Development scheme's scope is not limited to infrastructure development only, rather it also covers human resources development, laboratory equipment procurement, and high end research equipment supplies. Upgradation and improvement of existing infrastructure / basic amenities at the campus is also made part of some of the development schemes.

After approval of development schemes, the directorate plays its role of coordination between executing directorate (PDs) and the donor agencies, for effective monitoring of the projects, till its successful completion.

For the realization of above objectives this Directorate has prepared various development schemes and arranged funds amounting to Billion of rupees. This Directorate has also played a vital role in acquisition of land for setting up four Satellite Campuses (KSK, Narowal, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad) of UET Lahore where academic and research activities are going on in full swing.

For continuous development of its strength, and for pursuit of vision and mission of the University, the Directorate of P&D encourages its staff to improve their training and education through continuous learning, and help them attend on job trainings, and facilitate them for attending the trainings arranged by HEC and Planning Commission.
